Chip tuning of DSG and S-tronic transmissions

Automatic transmissions DSG and S-tronic and many other automatic transmissions are controlled by electronic programmable controllers and a tuning of such transmissions is possible. While using common words “chip tuning” we do not mean, of course, more power, as transmissions convert torque and do not generate any power. However, there is a common need to remove or correct torque limiters within transmission controller to enable power increase via engine control unit (ECU). For example: popular Audi and VW 2.0 TDI 143 hp engine has a torque limiter in a DSG set at a level of 350 Nm. The engine is capable to deliver a higher torque, like 400+Nm, but in case of DSG installed, the torque will be cut to these 350 Nm.

Performance Chip Tuning Basis

The tuning chip in the context of car tuning (ECU remap) is a modification of engine control software located in the central control unit (ECU, i.e. the computer,) of the engine. In the terminology of electronics a "chip" means an integrated circuit. Modification of the contents of the external program memory is the most frequent operation in engine controlling computers. The memory is usually located in an integrated circuit called Eprom or Flash memory. The contents of the micro-controller memory is sometimes modified too. In general, the philosophy behind the modification is not important for the results achieved – the most important is the careful development of the program, as well as its versatile modifications, rather than the method of feeding it into the ECU.

Performance Chip Tuning - Is It Worth It?

The answer to the question of whether the chip tuning makes sense and whether it is profitable requires impartiality, however, as a car tuner, I am a party. The average home-grown garage-tuner after hearing such a question exclaims: "But of course it's worth - I'm surprised that you're asking!" The problem is that if he was a combs – seller, he would offer them also to bald people, arguing ultimately that the comb can be used to make music instead, and yet we know that music is a medicine for the soul.
